Solar Energy

Botala is actively developing multiple solar energy projects in Botswana, aiming to enhance the country’s renewable energy capacity. The Company’s initial focus within this space is a phased approach starting with a 4MW pilot project Phuthi in the town of Serowe and scaling up to a large project 500MW at the Leupane Energy Hub.

Project Phuthi – 4MW Pilot Project

Small scale development to be located in the town of Serowe. Botala is the project lead on the successful bid for the project from BPC. The project company has been awarded a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement with BPC. Botala makes up a portion of the 49% foreign ownership with 51% locally owned. The final ownership structure will be determine prior to Financial Close expected Q3/ 2025.

When assessing the opportunity lead a bid for the project Botala saw this opportunity a means to start small in the solar space on a location that it had already completed EIA and grid connection studies. A project of this scale would provide Botala with early learnings and experience regarding local contractors, EPCs, lenders and regulatory bodies prior to progressing to larger more complex projects.

Phuthi – Expansion

The project has the potential to be expanded up to 20MW, the option will be assessed and a decision will be made coinciding with the timing of the first phase financial close decision.

Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park

Leupane solar project is a large-scale project where Botala has completed grid connection studies confirming the grid can accept up to 750MW of power at that location. Stage 1 (250MW) is being developed in JV with AAAS Energy BV of the Netherlands – BFS nearing completion. The second stage is looking at an additional 250MW of solar generation at the location.
