Energy Hubs

Once gas was discovered, the team at Botala understood the need to determine how to commercialise the gas discovery. A search was conducted to find downstream locations suitably close to existing infrastructure that would be used to provide a pathway to markets. Botala was able to secure two locations:

Serowe Energy hub (110Ha) in the town of Serowe:

  • Existing 66kV power line
  • Roads and accessibility
  • Access to labour and staff

Leupane Energy Hub (1520Ha) South East of the town of Palapye

  • Existing 400kV line and 2 x 220kV lines
  • Adjacent to the A1 freeway which connects Zambia, Zimbabwe and beyond to South Africa through Botswana.
  • Rail line running from Francistown to Gaborone and into South Africa.

The Serowe Hub is located in the nearest major town to the Serowe CBM Project and is an ideal location for Botala to establish small developments which support the grid, generate local jobs and utilise some of the gas indigenous to the area.

The Leupane site is far larger and the intention for Botala is to establish large scale projects. Access to roads, rail and strong power lines enables Botala and its partners to distribute both electricity and gas throughout Southern Africa.

Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park

  • LNG production, storage and distribution facilities
  • 500MW solar farm and 200MW gas power plant
  • Solar panel manufacturing
  • Service and storage facilities
  • Agrivoltaics – growing crops under solar panels
  • Leupane Stage 1 (250MW) is being developed in JV with AAAS Energy BV of the Netherlands – BFS nearing completion
  • AAAS to farm-in to 50% of the Project for A$1 million and is responsible for all initial development capital
  • Botala free-carried

The Serowe Energy Hub

  • 2OMW solar/gas hybrid power plant
  • 4MW solar Phuthi Pilot Project to supply the local grid (owned by Botala and various Botswana interests, including the Serowe community’s Ngwato Development Trust) – construction Q2 2025
    • Potential to increase to 20MW upon invitation from BPC
  • Small market gardening area

Through these strategic projects, Botala Energy is contributing to Botswana’s transition towards renewable energy, aiming to provide reliable and sustainable power solutions to meet the country’s growing energy demands.
